RAQS Media Collective’s presentation ‘Time Is Never Ripe’ marks a major solo exhibition in India after over 10 years at the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO) in Leh conceived and curated by Qamoos Bukhari.
The exhibition at LAMO, brings the collectives hybrid art featuring nearly 25 bodies of work across photography, painting, sculpture, installation and film into dialogue with the landscape of Ladakh. The majority of artworks in the exhibition have never been displayed in South Asia before.
The exhibition situates RAQS’s artistic meditation on the entanglement of cosmic forces with ideas of labour, aggression, memory, and desire.
Their unique worldview, which is informed by the pluralistic nature of their practice, is placed into direct conversation with the utopic, humanist values that sustain the Himalayan society’s relationship with nature. Exhibited within LAMO, Ladakh’s first of its kind UNESCO-recognised contemporary art centre, with its stone walls, timber structures, and unfiltered light, the artworks enter into dialogue with the 17th century building’s material fabric.
The space functions as a philosophical instrument: a device for recalibrating perception and apprehending Ladakh not as a remote landscape but as a site where historical and notional times converge within a sensitive ecology. In doing so, the show invites visitors to explore how planetary processes and global human economies remain inseparable.
RAQS Media Collective (founded in 1992 in New Delhi, India, by Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, Shuddhabrata Sengupta) is among the most acclaimed and influential contemporary artist collectives, with an international practice extending over 30 years.
